Valley of the roses
Discover the well-known Bulgarian old craft of rose distillation; pay interesting visits to the rose oil cosmetics centre, the folklore traditions and festivities; live music, songs and dances; intellectual and educational talks with Father Jordan in “St. Nicolas” church.
Day 1: Sofia
Arrival in Sofia. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 2: Sofia – Bachkovo – Plovdiv (180 km)
Travel to the second largest Bulgarian monastery – Bachkovo monastery. Lunch in Assenovgrad. Visit to the “St. Nicola” church. Getting back to Plovdiv. Enjoy a sightseeing the old part of the city – an architectural museum. Among the antique monuments, the most impressive are the ancient amphitheater and the Roman stadium. Dinner. Overnight stay.
Day 3: Plovdiv - Karlovo – Plovdiv (160 km)
Early breakfast. Make for Karlovo. A stop in the rose fields near the city – rose – picking, folklore program – live music, songs and dances, dedicated to the Queen of the flowers. Visit to the craftsman’s centre, where a demonstration of rose oil manufacturing can be seen, as well as tasting jam and liquor of roses, and one can choose from hand-made souvenirs. Lunch. Get back to Plovdiv. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Plovdiv – Kazanlak – Veliko Tarnovo (200 km)
After breakfast – set for Kazanlak – the capital of the Valley of roses. Lunch. A visit to the Thracian tomb – a remarkable monument from the early Hellenic period, discovered in 1944, under the protection of UNESCO. Accommodation in Veliko Tarnovo. Dinner. Overnight stay.
Day 5: Veliko Tarnovo – Arbanasi – Ivanovo – Veliko Tarnovo (200 km)
Breakfast. Visit to Arbanasi – the Konstantsaliev’s museum – house, built in the beginning of the 18th century. Set off for Ivanovo, where you can visit the rock monastery (under the protection of UNESCO). It represents a number of small rock – cut churches, chapels and monks cells, with beautiful frescoes. Get back to Veliko Tarnovo. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Veliko Tarnovo – Troyan – Sofia (260 km)
After breakfast – set out for Troyan. Arrival and sightseeing tour of the Troyan monastery, built in the 14th century – at the end of the Second Bulgarian kingdom. Lunch. Set out for Sofia. Accommodation. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7: Sofia – Rila monastery – Sofia (240 km)
Breakfast. Set off for Rila monastery, and doubtlessly the biggest tourist attraction among the monasteries in Bulgaria. It was added to the list of monuments under the protection of UNESCO. Lunch. Get back to Sofia. A visit to the Boyana church – a monument under the protection of UNESCO, situated at the foots of the Vitosha mountain. Dinner. Overnight stay.
Day 8: Sofia
After breakfast, a walk in the centre of the capital, a visit to “St. George” church, the Presidency, the “Narodno Sabranie” square with the Bulgarian Parliament building, the “Aleksandar Nevski” cathedral, the “St. Sofia” church. Lunch. Transfer to the Sofia airport.
